For our end-of-year event, seasoned journalist and iconoclast Andrew Fowler will introduce his latest book, Nuked: The submarine fiasco that sank Australia's sovereignty.
Nuked describes the twists and turns of submarine deals and provides an in-depth analysis of the negotiation of the agreements and the issues associated with the manufacture and maintenance of nuclear submarines, especially nuclear-powered ones. The main thrust of Fowler's talk will be his assessment that the creation of AUKUS revealed a dangerous over-reach of executive government and the failure of due process in the Australian public service. Nuked demonstrates that, by entering into the AUKUS deal, Australia has fundamentally compromised its sovereignty.
Fowler will explain why he decided to write the book, the difficulties he encountered, and what he hoped to achieve by its publication. His talk will take the audience through the narrative of the acquisition process from Canberra to London, Washington and Paris. It will illustrate acts of deception, discuss why the US and Australia sidelined the French, and examine the role of the media in this "unholy mess".
His book is available through Melbourne University Press
