The post-war economic consensus that has underpinned the global system for more than 80 years is entering one of its most uncertain periods to date. Governments, civil society, and industry around the world are debating how best to make their countries more resilient and competitive in a rapidly changing global economic and security landscape. With the renewed emergence of explicitly protectionist trade policies by state and non-state actors previously advocating for a more liberalised trade system, our interns will debate one of the key pillars of the global international order:

"In 2025, in view of the urgency of strengthening national economies, the world needs protectionism more than it needs free trade."

On the affirmative team, we have: Anton, Charlotte, and Michelle.

Anton Peden is a second-year postgraduate student pursuing a dual Master of International Relations and Master of Security and Strategic Studies.

Charlotte Ryder is a final-year student at the Australian National University, completing a double degree in International Business and Politics, Philosophy, and Economics (PPE).

Michelle Chandra is a fourth-year student at The University of New South Wales pursuing a Bachelor of Law and Arts (Politics and International Relations).

On the negative team we have Bayan, Lily, and Sameera.

Bayan Sohailee is a graduate of Western Sydney University, holding a unique quadruple degree in International Studies, Social Science, Creative Leadership, and Forensic Science.

Lily Manning is an Honours Graduate in International and Global Studies at the University of Sydney. In 2023, she studied at Sciences Po Paris and speaks advanced French.

Sameera Pillai is pursuing a Master's degree in International Relations at the University of Sydney, specialising in American Foreign Policy and International Law.
