Thailand held its general elections on May 14 with shocking results. The most radical and progressive party, the Move Forward Party (MFP) won a landslide election. Yet after months of extended power vacuum and drawn-out negotiations between parties, the MFP could not govern and became the main opposition. Instead, Pheu Thai Party broke up with the MFP and held hands with the conservative political elites, their long-time foes, to form an 11-party coalition. This talk will discuss the twists and turns of the Thai election in 2023 and its implications on Thailand, Southeast Asia and Thailand-Australia relations.
