Irris Makler
foreign correspondentIrris Makler is an Australian author, analyst and veteran foreign correspondent, who has just returned home after 25 years overseas. She was the ABC’s Moscow correspondent and was based in Jerusalem for many years.
Irris was one of the first journalists into Afghanistan after 9-11, and covered the War on Terror in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Arab spring and the Palestinian Intifada, reporting from the West Bank and Gaza. She was woken by sirens in Jerusalem on 7 October 2023 and covered the Hamas attack and the conflict in Gaza intensively from that day for France 24, CBC (the Canadian public broadcaster) and Australian outlets including SBS news, the ABC and The Australian.
She describes the last 18 months in Israel-Palestine as journalistically gruelling, chronicling such extraordinary levels of suffering and sorrow.
