In late 2022, Indonesia's national parliament enacted a new Criminal Code – the product of over 50 years of legal and political debate. Much of the discussion about the Code has focused on morality offences and their possible impact on visitors to Bali, and on how the Code is likely to be used to stifle dissent.
This presentation by Professor Simon Butt focuses on another aspect of the Code – its 'living law' provisions – under which customary law, and perhaps even Islamic norms, might find their way into criminal trials. While representing an attempt to make the Code more 'Indonesian', these provisions might provide a means by which draconian and even more conservative norms find their way into trials.

We will have space for a limited number of participants in-person at the Glover Cottages, tickets to be pre-paid . Once the limit for in-person attendees is reached, tickets will no longer be sold on the website or at the door. In-person attendees will get priority during the Q & A session.
