The current Sri Lankan economic crisis has its roots in a longer history of political turbulence and economic mismanagement. Taking a historical lens, this talk will trace key failures in Sri Lankan political leadership and its responses to competing geopolitical orders throughout the 20th and 21st centuries that have paved the way for the current crisis.
During this period, Australia has taken a growing interest in Sri Lanka due to its strategic location in the Indian Ocean region, which in recent years has intensified due to the arrival of asylum seekers by boat. The talk will consider the implications of these histories for understanding the ongoing Sri Lankan crisis and Australia's responses to its Indian Ocean neighbour.

We will have space for a limited number of participants in-person at the Glover Cottages, tickets to be pre-paid (all in-person attendees must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 or hold a valid exemption). Once the limit for in-person attendees is reached, tickets will no longer be sold on the website or at the door.
Refreshments will be served from 6pm at Glover Cottages.
